Dear Vinny,
As someone who previously sold residential and commercial property and is now transitioning into land sales, specifically in farms and ranches, what steps can I take to enhance my knowledge and develop my expertise in this niche market?
Dear Transition,
You can hone your skills in land sales in several ways, but having on-the-ground experience is the best way to learn. Do you know any veteran land brokers who would allow you to tag along on some showings or listing interviews? One of the best pieces of advice I got when I started in land sales was from a veteran land broker. He said, "Son, god gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason; in this business, you better be listening twice as much as you're talking.” You can join several land sales training organizations to educate yourself, like the Realtors Land Institute and Accredited Land Consultants. Be prepared for lots of disappointments in the land sales world, but if you can weather the storm, it can be a very fruitful business.
